There are
few materials that offer any of the characteristics to the same performance
level as PTFE. To have at once all of the characteristics that are combined
in PTFE make it truly a king of plastics. It is this unique combination
of properties that first positioned PTFE as the material of choice in
the most demanding and critical applications such as spacecraft and aircraft
wiring. The properties that make PTFE ideally suited for all high performance
wire and cable applications include:
- Its unsurpassed
dielectric properties, low relative permittivity and loss factors while
maintaining extremely high specific resistance;
- Its resistance
to dielectric breakdown and arcing is unmatched by almost all other
insulating materials;
- Its unrivalled
ability to remain functional from cryogenic temperatures up to 260°C;
- Its excellent
resistance to ageing, even in the presence of the most aggressive media
and ultraviolet light.
- Its high
resistance to fatigue, even when exposed to flexing or vibration;
- Its high
voltage rating which allows only a thin layer of coating to be used,
thus saving space and weight while limiting the cost;
Its resistance
to ignition, low contribution to heat and smoke and non-drip characteristics
are critical safety factors.
