Applications
and Properties
Applications
PTFE tape
can be used either as a primary insulating material wrapped directly on
the conductor or as a jacketing material to bundle cables together. It
is applied as a spiral wrap and most often is subsequently sintered at
high temperature. Wire wrapping with PTFE tape offers important advantages
over extrusion, not the least being the investment in capital equipment,
which is considerably lower while giving the same high performance cable.
Wrapping also offers distinct advantages in the following areas:
- Production
of short lengths of cable of a few meters only or else very long lengths;
- Manufacturing
of complicated constructions, large cross sections, heavy cables and
braided cables;
- Making
hybrid constructions using different types of tape;
- Better
control of concentricity with consistent insulation thickness along
the entire cable length;
- Better
control of adhesion to conductor and strip-force
Typical applications
where PTFE is the material of choice as an electrical insulation would
include:
- Where
speed and clarity of signal are critical
- Where
hot-spots or elevated temperatures are present
- Where
aggressive media is present or sustained exposure to UV light
- Where
safety concerns are present, especially risk of fire.
- Where
low attenuation, low dielectric constant and high velocity signal propagation
are desired, such as telecommunication cable
